Stone-Baulch Family Cemetery

Hilltop

The Stone-Baulch Family Cemetery is located one and three-tenths miles north of the city limits of Gallatin, Tennessee on Old Highway 109 about 500 feet east on the property of Mr. Charles Cantrell, just south of Computer Lane. Mr. Cantrell purchased this property from Nelson Howard Baulch (1902-1986) in 1953. The cemetery is about 100 feet wide and 85 feet deep. The gate is in the center on the western side of the fenced cemetery.

Entrance

It is my understanding that Hugh Douglas Stone and his three sons, Larry Douglas Stone, William Nicholas Stone and Marshall Carter Stone, paid for a new barbed wire fence for this cemetery in the early 1990's.

In June 2001 my sister, Sarah Lee Baulch McGinley, and I visited this cemetery to transcribe as much as possible from the tombstones. Our earliest relative buried here is our third-great-grandfather, Stephen Stone (1750-1838). Many tombstones were broken and worn to the point that reading them was very difficult or impossible. In the fall of 2002 a team of archaeologists was engaged to restore this cemetery. The results were outstanding! Buried headstones were discovered, worn tombstones were restored to legibility, and broken stones were repaired. A new stone and iron fence was constructed in 2003 to replace the barbed wire fence. I would like to thank Robert Elmer Baulch, Jr., Sarah Lee Baulch McGinley, and Mary Bright Hunter Young for their assistance in this restoration project.

Plaque

A new transcription was performed, and new photos have been updated below. A comparison has been made between our latest transcription and what is recorded in the Sumner County, Tennessee Cemetery Records, Compiled by Margaret Cummings Snider and Joan Hollis Yorgason, McDowell Publications, 1981. The comparison notes are listed in braces as follows: {SCTCR …. } for each tombstone. Stones will be listed below in order from north to south. NOTE: You may click on any tombstone to get a larger view of it.

Note that the Sumner County, Tennessee Cemetery Records, compiled by Margaret Cummings Snider and Joan Hollis Yorgason, lists one tombstone as "Keen, Annie Lee Jernigan Wife of C. O. Keen b. 18 Aug 1888 d. 14 Apr 1976". We did not find a tombstone with this inscription. It was probably identified with a temporary funeral home marker when Margaret Cummings Snider and Joan Hollis Yorgason did their research and was never replaced with a tombstone.
